STAC Field Hockey Rolls to 6-0 Win Over Molloy

Sparkill, N.Y. - Nicola Van Vuuren and Jasmijn Van Drunen tallied two goals each as the St. Thomas Aquinas field hockey team routed Molloy University, 6-0, at Spartan Field on Sunday afternoon.

STAC improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the NE10, while Molloy drops to 1-6 and 0-3 in conference play.

How It Happened

  • The Spartans and Lions played a scoreless first quarter with the hosts posting seven shots in the stanza.
  • Nicola Van Vuuren opened the scoring just seconds into the second quarter, as Van Vuuren would drive through the middle of the field and fire a shot past Lions goalie Kelsey Price to give STAC a 1-0 lead.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas would double its advantage moments later, with Hailey Galison powering her way around several defenders to find teammate Jasmijn Van Drunen with a feed that was put to the back to the cage to make it 2-0.
  • After the halftime break, the Spartans would strike for its third goal, when Brittany Lionarons would find Nicola Van Vuuren with a quick pass off of the automatic restart on a foul. Van Vuuren blasted a high-rising shot to the back of the net, earning her second goal on the afternoon.
  • Late in the third quarter, it would be Brittany Lionarons' turn to score, as she would be awarded a penalty stroke by the officiating crew. Lionarons would roof a shot past Kelsey Price to give STAC a commanding 4-0 advantage.
  • Just before the buzzer to end the third stanza, Olivia Cerbo would send a cross-field pass to Sam Van Der Valk who fired a laser into an empty net to make it 5-0 St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • The final goal came in the fourth quarter with Jasmijn Van Drunen taking an initial shot that was saved by Kelsey Price and then sticking with the play, found her own rebound and deposited a second shot to the back of the cage for her second tally of the day to make it 6-0 Spartans.
