STAC Field Hockey Suffers 3-1 Setback at Bentley

Waltham, Mass. - Playing the first of back-to-back contests due to schedule adjustments caused by Hurricane Lee, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback at Bentley University on Sunday morning.

STAC slips to 0-5 overall and 0-1 in the NE10, while Bentley improves to 3-3 and 0-1.

Libby Harrison, Madison Halas and Meagan Hayes tallied goals for the Falcons, with Nicola Van Vuuren (2nd) scoring the lone goal for the Spartans.

In the cage, Carlijn De Groot (L, 0-5) got the start for the maroon and gold and made five stops on eight shots faced. Mia Trottie (W, 3-1) stopped two of three shots faced for Bentley to earn her third win of the campaign.

How it Happened

  • 1st Quarter - Off of a STAC turnover and subsequent foul, Libby Harrison took an initial shot which ricocheted off of the pads of Spartans goalie Carlijn De Groot. Harrison was able to corral the rebound and fire a second shot off of the left goal post and into the net to give Bentley a 1-0 lead.
  • 2nd Quarter - Another turnover and foul by the visitors, allowed Bentley to march up the field, with Gracie Moore sending a spin-o-rama pass to teammate Meagan Hayes, who found Madison Halas at the side of the net for the tip-in tally to make it 2-0 Falcons.
  • 2nd Quarter - On a Bentley penalty corner, two shots would be stopped by the Spartans, one on a block and one via a Carlijn De Groot save. However, the ball would come loose from De Groot's pads and a mad scramble for possession would ensue, allowing Meagan Hayes to find the ball and put it home, to increase the Falcons' lead to 3-0.
  • 2nd Quarter - STAC finally broke the shutout, as off of a Katelyn Cerrato penalty corner, she would find Adriana Alfisi, who would rifle a shot toward the net. Nicola Van Vuuren would stop the pass and put it by goalie Mia Trottie to make it a 3-1 game.
