Spartans Lose OT Heartbreaker At American International, 3-2

Springfield, Mass. - Despite rallying back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of fourth quarter goals to force overtime, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team fell to American International College, 3-2 in extra time, on Saturday evening at Ronald J. Abdow Field.

STAC slips to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in NE10 play, while AIC improves to 5-2 and 3-0.

Maddie Darling, Mar Busqueta tallied goals in regulation for the host Yellow Jackets, with Brooke Szafran scoring the overtime, game winner. Meanwhile, Phileine Langeveld  and Hailey Galison paced the furious comeback for the Spartans, netting a goal apiece in the match.

In the cage, Frederique den Hartog (W, 4-2) got the start for AIC and allowed two goals on six shots. Madeline Schaefer got the nod in net for the Spartans and made two stops on four shots in 27 and a half minutes of action, before being spelled by Ailsa Ogilvie (L, 0-3) who made three saves on four shots.

How it Happened

  • AIC opened the scoring with just under a minute to play in the first quarter, as Fenna Voll fed Maddie Darling right at the stroke dot. Darling was able to walk in and fire her third of the season past goalie Madeline Schaefer to make it 1-0.
  • In the second quarter, Mar Busqueta doubled the Yellow Jackerts lead at 2-0, taking a free hit off of a foul and driving into the top of the circle before blasting in her first of the campaign by Schaefer and to the back of the net.
  • An uneventful third quarter, gave way to a helter skelter fourth, as the STAC got onto the scoreboard. Phileine Langeveld's third goal of the year came as she drove in from the right side and was able to push a shot through goalie Frederique den Hartog and into the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Late in regulation, the Spartans tied the game on a penalty corner as Hailey Galison fired in a shot off of a pass by Nicola Van Vuuren, beating den Hartog for her third of the season and to square things at 2-2.
  • Once the teams began overtime, AIC worked quickly, and drew a corner just past the two-minute mark of the extra session. Brooke Szafran's insert went to the top of the circle for Mar Busqueta, who dished left for Fenna Voll. Voll cut toward the goal line before firing a shot that Brooke Szafran deflected past netminder Ailsa Ogilvie for her third of the season to end the game and give the hosts the 3-2 victory.
