Heijmans Hat-trick Not Enough, As Spartans Lose to D'Youville

Sparkill, N.Y. - Despite receiving a hat-trick from from freshman Madelief Heijmans, in just her second collegiate game of the season, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Women's Field Hockey team suffered a 6-4 setback to D'Youville University on Sunday morning at Spartan Field.

STAC slips to 0-2 on the season, while D'Youville earns its first-ever victory in the program's inaugural regular season match.

How it Happened

  • Off of a STAC penalty corner insert by Hailey Galison, Nicola Van Vuuren put a shot on net that was saved, but not controlled by D'Youville's Hayden Herbold. Madelief Heijmans would then corral the rebound and deposit it to the back of the cage, past Herbold to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
  • Another penalty corner insert, this time by D'Youville's Erica Prible wound up finding the stick of Kelsey Robertson on a series of quick passes, with Robertson firing a shot past STAC's Ailsa Ogilvie to knot the score at 1-1.
  • Before the end of the opening quarter, Erica Prible sent a penalty corner pass to teammate Alexis Schleef, who took a shot toward the cage. Prible would find her way to the front of the net and tip home Schleef's attempt past Ogilvie to give the Saints their first lead of the contest at 2-1.
  • A penalty corner attempt by Hailey Galison would find its way to Phileine Langeveld, who then sent a return feed back to Galison for a soft shot past D'Youville netminder Hayden Herbold to tie the score up at 2-2.
  • An initial shot by Kelsey Robertson on a penalty corner insert was saved by STAC's Madeline Schaefer. However, a loose rebound was gathered by Madisyn Grawl and put home to give the visiting Saints a 3-2 advantage.
  • Kelsey Robertson scored her second of the afternoon when a Spartans turnover would prove costly. Robertson would accept a pass and power her way up field on a two-on-one, firing a backhand shot to the lower right corner of the cage to double the D'Youville lead, 4-2.
  • STAC would cut their disadvantage to one with three minutes to play before halftime, as an initial net mouth scramble would lead to Madelief Heijmans gaining possession of the ball and putting a shot home to make it 4-3.
  • D'Youville would restore its two-goal advantage, as an offensive rush would lead to Kelsey Robertson finding her way around three Spartans defenders and sending a soft shot past a charging Ailsa Ogilvie to the back of the net for the hat-trick goal and 5-3 Saints lead.
  • A St. Thomas Aquinas turnover in their own end would result in Kelsey Robertson finding Madisyn Grawl at the left post for a tap-in goal to make it 6-3 D'Youville.
  • The Spartans narrowed their deficit late in the third quarter, as Madelief Heijmans would receive a pass from Lily Schommer and send it to the back of the net to get the hosts within two at 6-4.
