The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's Golf team finished 3rd this past weekend at the 5th Annual Peter King Memorial tournament hosted by Dowling College. On day 1 the Spartans shot a team score of 308 with steady rainfall, temperatures in the mid- 40's and winds gusting at 25mph.
Battling the difficult conditions was senior Sean Campbell who
led the Spartans with a team low round of 75. Junior Chris
Fitzpatrick posted a solid round of 76 while Sophomore Mike
Gunderson shot a round of 77. Rounding out the team scoring was
freshman Nick Delango who posted a round of 80.
After holding the lead after round 1, the Spartans struggled during
round 2. Battling winds upwards of 40mph, Chris Fitzpatrick was the
only Spartan able to break 80, posting a solid round of 74 which
was good for a 2-day score of 150 (76-74) and a 5th place finish.
Senior Sean Campbell posted a second round score of 82 giving him a
2-day score of 157 (75-82) good for 15th place. Mike Gunderson
finished in a tie for 18th place after shooting a 2-day score of
159 (77-82) while freshman Nick Delango finished tied for 22nd
after shooting 160 (80-80). The Spartans shot a day 2 score of 318
for a total scores of 626 leaving them in third place out of the 14
team field.
The Spartans finished their spring with a Division II head-to-head
record of 40-5-1 including three tournament victories, one 2nd
place finish and one third place finish. This spring season
also gave Coach Stephen Ferrara his 300th career head-to-head
Division II victory in his 4 years at St. Thomas Aquinas.
