Spartans Finish 3rd out of Top 16 in East/Atlantic Region

The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's golf team head south to the St. James Plantation hosted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The event was hosted on the Founder's Club course in Southport, N.C.; a 6,500 yard P.B Dye course. On day one, the team was led by senior Mike Gunderson and Sophomore Tommy Linehan who shot 71 and 72 respectively.

Rounding out the team scoring were Nick Delango and John Casey who shot 75 and 79.  With a team score of 297, the Spartans sat in 3rd place over night behind the California University of Pennsylvania and Bentley University.  On day two, the team struggled out the gate giving away shots on their early holes.  After his 1-under par 71, Gunderson started off slow with a few bogeys on his front nine.  Remaining patient, Gunderson was able to chip away at the deficit and carded a solid round of 72. His 71-72-143 was good for a 4th place finish.

Tommy Linehan battled back from a few bad holes during his 2nd round, but was able to secure a round of 76 for a 2-day score of 148 (72-76) leaving him tied for 11th for the tournament. Junior Nick Delango put together another stellar day of golf and finished his 2nd round with a 74.  After rounds of 74 and 75, Delango finished tied for 14th place with a 2-day score of 149. Seniors Jay Barry and John Casey shot rounds of 81 and 84 to round out the team scoring.

Casey finished the event with rounds of 79-84-163 leaving him tied for 70th while Barry carded rounds of 87-81-168 for a t-85 finish. The team managed to shoot 303 in round two for a 2-day score of 600 and a third place finish behind the champions from California University.  The team will be back in action next weekend at their home event at Rum Pointe G.C. in Berlin, MD.
