
The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's golf team had a wire to wire victory at the Dowling College Fall Shootout at Long Island National Golf Club in Riverhead, NY. The Spartans had a very strong outing in the first regional event of the fall after two steady rounds of golf.
On day one the team was led by junior Nick Delango who carded a tournament low 69 (-3). Adding to the solid play were senior Mike Gunderson and freshman Jack Rice who both managed to fire rounds of 72 (+1). Rounding out the scoring were John Casey and Tommy Linehan who shot 76 and 78 respectively. The Spartans round one score of 289 was good for first place, but only left the team 6 shots ahead of Post University and 6 shots ahead of host Dowling College and Adelphi University.
On day two the Spartans continued their stellar play being led by Mike Gunderson who fired an even par round of 71. Gunderson who got it to 4 under through 12 scattered for bogeys in the final stretch leaving him 1 shot from earning medalist honors. Senior John Casey rebounded nicely from his first round shooting a round of 72. Tommy Linehan improved 5 shots to post a solid round of 73 while Rice and Delango both carded rounds of 75. With a second round team score of 291, the Spartans finished the tournament with a team score of 580 (289-291), good for a 12-shot victory over Post University (295-297--592).
