Spartan Golf Season Wrap Up

The St. Thomas Aquinas men's golf team wraps up their most successful season in the school's history; a season that has the team ranked inside the top 25 in the country for the first time. Multiple team and individual records have been set including a record that no other collegiate golfer has accomplished, a round of 60.

The team's worst finish all year was 4th place at a Division I tournament hosted by Columbia University. They earned 4 tournament victories, all of which included an individual champion from the Spartans. Aside from the victories, the team also earned three 2nd place finishes and three third place finishes. The team has received votes for the top 25 in multiple Golf Coaches Association polls and landed a #20 ranking according to Golfstat as late as April 15th.

Multiple records were set this season, the first being the low team score at the Dowling September Shootout at TallGrass GC. The team set the 18 hole record with a 12-under par 272 and went on to break the 36 hole record in that same event after shooting a 15 under par 553. This event was highlighted by sophomore Michael Miranda's course record and NCAA record score of an 11 under par 60 in the first round. This is the lowest round by 2 shots out of all 10,000 collegiate golfers in the country.

Senior Chris Gentle and junior Brendan Hunter set new individual records for team scoring averages. Gentle finished the regular season with a 73.49 scoring average, the first Spartan to finish the regular season with a sub 74 scoring average. Gentle's spectacular season was only bested by Hunter, who finished his spring with a flurry of sub par rounds earning him a 73.11 final scoring average. The two are currently ranked #4 and #2 in the region.

Michael Miranda had another solid year for the Spartans, posting a 74.34 scoring average over the team's 10 tournaments. Miranda had three rounds in the 60's and won his first college tournament. Junior Kevin Gately as played well this year maintaining a 74.7 average and earning two runner up finishes in 10 events. Freshman Mike Frizalone had an excellent first year with the Spartans. He earned his first two career wins at the Dominican Charger Challenge and the Glen Oaks Shootout. His scoring average was 75.36 which ranked him 2nd in the East region among all freshman.

The Spartans finish the season ranked #24 among all Division II teams and sit at #1 among east region teams. There 293.6 team scoring average is the lowest in their history and good for 20th among all Division II programs. They are headed to their 15th straight NCAA Super Regional and look to advance to their 5th National Championship in the last 10 years.

Coach Ferrara "is extremely pleased with how well the team has played this year. We have had so many great accomplishments, but the team has remained hungry." Coach Ferrara is most pleased with how the team handled themselves in Miami Beach at the Barry University "Buccaneer Invitational." "The team played two nice rounds, but weren't satisfied with their performance. They came out in the final round and played better than some of the top teams in the country under extremely difficult conditions."

Coach Ferrara is "excited about another Super Regional appearance" and "looks forward to the possibility of and advancing to the NCAA National Championship in Denver, Colorado.
