Spartans Set Multiple Records at September Shootout

The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's golf team had a record setting weekend at Tallgrass Golf Club in Shoreham, NY. Four records were set in the 36-hole event; two team scores and two individual records. Sophomore Michael Miranda set two Spartan individual records, shattering the 18-hole number posting a scintillating 11- under par 60.

Miranda followed that up with a 1-under par 70 in round 2 for a record setting two day score of 130 (-12). In addition to Miranda's accomplishments, the team managed to break the 18 and 36 hole scoring records with an opening round of -12, 272. They went on to shoot 3-under par in round two, setting the 36 hole record with an impressive 553 (-15). The team pulled away from the field, improving on an 8 shot lead after round 1 to eventually win by 29 shots over second place Lemoyne College.

Behind Miranda's Medalist honors was Junior Kevin Gately who finished in a tie for second place after shooting a 2-under par 140 (71-69) for the event. Senior Chris Gentle had a 5th place finish after posting an even par score of 142 (73-69) for the tournament. Brendan Hunter earned a tied for 6th finish with a 1-over par 143 (68-75) and freshman Mike Frizalone finished tied for 12th at +5 for the event at 147 (74-73).

The Spartans are back in action next weekend at the Tuxedo Fall Invitational hosted by Columbia University.
