Spartan Golf Finishes 3rd at "The Trojan"; Skaggs Places 2nd

Goldsboro, N.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Golf team ventured south to play in their second event of the spring at The Trojan hosted by Mt. Olive University this past weekend. The team earned a 3rd place finish with a team score of 886 (301-290-295). During the first round of play, Nolan Skaggs led the team with a stellar 4-under 68. Djaia Darrason was next on the team posting a round of 74, while Donte Groppuso managed to shoot 78. Rounding out the team scoring in round 1 was Jarred Huggins who carded an 81.

In the second 18 on day 1, the Spartans improved by 11 shots behind another great round by sophomore Nolan Skaggs. Skaggs had 3 birdies and 3 bogeys to card an even par 72. Djaia Darrason continued his solid play also carding an even par 72, while Tanner Little bounced back wonderfully from a difficult first round to shoot an even. Donte Groppuso's 2-over 74 rounded out the 2nd round scores leading the Spartans to a 290 as a team.

During the final round of play the team continued its solid play, posting the low team score of the day. Nolan Skaggs continued his amazing play and carded a 1-under 71. Skaggs narrowly missed birdie on his last hole which would have forced a playoff for medalist honors. His 3-day score of 211 (68-72-71) left him at 5-under par for the tournament, just 1 shot behind the winner. Donte Groppuso was next low score of the day, shooting a 1-over 73, while Tanner Little battled to shoot a 2-over 74. Jarred Huggins and Djaia Darrason both posted rounds of 77.

The Spartans are back in action next Monday-Tuesday down in Miami Shores, FL at the Barry University "Battle at the Shores."
