Donte Groppuso’s Fourth Straight Top 10 Outing Leads Spartans to 3rd Place Finish

Watertown, Conn. - The St. Thomas Aquinas men’s golf team continued their fall campaign with a 3rd place finish at the Post Invitational at Watertown Country Club. Donte Groppuso continued his stellar play with a 4th consecutive top 10 finish among the 80+ player field. During day 1 of the tournament, the Spartans played 36 holes of continuous golf. In the first round, the team fired a team score of 294 behind the steady play of newcomer Djaia Darrason who made 4 birdies and 4 bogeies for an opening round 71. Sophomore Tanner Little played excellent golf all day and managed to card an opening round 73, while Donte Groppuso shot a round of 74. Rounding out the team scoring were newcomers Juan Ignacio Vicente and Jarred Huggins who posted rounds of 76 and 77 respectively. During the seond 18 of the day, Groppuso and Little led the charge with rounds of 70. Little started his round 3 over par through his first 3 holes, but manage to fight back to shoot 1 under par. Groppuso was steady all day making 4 birdies and just 3 bogies for his 1 under round. Vicente, who started his round 3 over through 2, managed to play his next 16 holes at even par to shoot 74. Djaia Darrason struggled during much of his round, but managed two late birdies to post a 75. Jarred Huggins struggled on his second 18, carding a round of 80. With team scores of 294-289 the team sat in third place heading into the final round of play.

Battling more difficult conditions and challenging pin placements, the team struggled during the final round of play. Donte Groppuso battled all day and managed to shoot a round of 72. Tanner Little capped off his best tournament of his young career with a final round of 74. Juan Ignacio Vicente was able to shoot 77, while Djaia Darrason and Jarred Huggins put up rounds of 78. The teams final round team score of 301 left them in 3rd place out of the 14 regional opponents. Post University and LeMoyne College finished tied just 8 shots ahead of the Spartans. LeMoyne College was crowned champions after an exciting team playoff.

Donte Groppuso and Tanner Little were the low Spartans with 3-round scores of 216 and 217 good for a 6th place and 7th place finish respectively.

STAC wraps up its fall season down in Lake Hickory, North Carolina at the Lenoir Rhyne Fall Invitational on October 24-25.
