Golf Wins Spartan Shootout; Moves to #1 in the East Region

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Golf team took home first place in their home event this weekend after shooting a team score of 596 (304-292). With that victory, the Spartans took over the #1 spot in the latest Golfstat regional rankings.

During the first round of play at the Phillip J. Rotella Memorial Golf Course, the team struggled to find their groove, shooting a team score of 304. Juan Ignacio Simon and Donte Groppusso were the low Spartans, both carding rounds of 75. Nolan Skaggs was just behind them, posting a round of 78, while Tanner Little and Djaia Darrason shot rounds of 78 and 79 respectively. The Spartans found themselves in 2nd place after the first round of play behind Goldey-Beacom and Dominican.

In the second round of play, the team bounced back with a fine round of golf. Tanner Little carded the low round for the team shooting an excellent score of 71. Nolan Skaggs also improved, shooting an even-par 72. Ignacio Simon was able to shave 2 shots during the second round and carded a 73, while Donte Groppuso and Djaia rounded out the team scoring posting rounds of 76 and 78 respectively. The team's 2-day score of 596 (304-292) was good for a 9-shot win over Wilmington University.

With their recent strong play, the Spartans have climbed 4 spots this spring to take over the #1 ranking in the latest Golfstat East regional rankings overtaking both Le Moyne and Assumption.

The team is back in action on Saturday, April 15 at the Roar-EE hosted by Columbia University at Wiltwyck Country Club in Kingston, N.Y.
