Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Golf team followed up their solid showing in Miami Beach with a wire-to-wire victory in their home spring invitational on Friday. Coming from temperatures in the high 80's, the team battled frigid temperatures and blustery winds during the 36-hole event.
During the first round of play, the team battled winds gusting to 30 mph to card a team score of 295. Leading the charge was Tanner Little who battled all round to shoot a score of 72. Juan Ignacio Simon and Nolan Skaggs were just behind Little, shooting stellar rounds of 72. Diego Ocasio was able to card a solid 75 while Djaia Darrason posted a 78. The Spartans team score of 295 was good for first place, 10 shots ahead of Adelphi University.
During the final round, Tanner Little continued his hot play, carding a 1-under par 71. Little's 36-hole score of 143 (72-71) was good enough for his first collegiate victory. Just behind Little was Juan Ignacio Simon. His second-round score of 71 left him with a tournament score of 145 (74-71) leaving him in solo 2nd place. Diego Ocasio and Nolan Skaggs carded rounds of 72 and 73 respectively and finished T-3 in the event at 147. Djaia Darrason rounded out the team scoring with a final round score of 76. Darrason's total score of 154 (78-76) left him in 18th place.
The team's final round score of 287 (-1) left them with a combined score of 582, 22 shots ahead of the second-place team from Dominican University. This is the team's second victory of the year and second under-par team score in 5 rounds.
The team is back in action on Monday (April 8) and Tuesday (April 9) at The Trojan hosted by Mt. Olive in Goldsboro, North Carolina.
