Spartans Cease Skid, Stun Setters, 62-60

Justin Brown led the way with 15 of his 19 points in the second half to lift the the St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team to a 62-60 triumph at Pace University. James Ockimey added 17 for the Spartans, who snapped a seven-game slide. The Spartans improve to 3-7 on the season, while the Setters slide to 6-5 with the non-conference setback.

STAC jumped from the gate quickly, with three different scorers providing seven of the tilt's first nine points. The hosts fought back and the teams proceeded to take turns exchanging the lead on seven occasions. Pace extended its biggest edge of the half to 31-26, but Ockimey's three-pointer at the buzzer sent the visitors into the locker room trailing by just a pair.

Pace enjoyed a 37-33 advantage with 16 minutes to play before Brown provided the spark to turn the game around. Starting with a lay-up at the 15:22 mark, he scored the game's next eight points to give his Spartans the lead. His hot hand was not finished yet - in all, he nailed three treys in scoring all of his squad's points in a 13-4 run over a span of just under four minutes to secure a 46-41 edge.

STAC led by as many as six points down the stretch but the game was not without its anxious moments, as the Setters pulled to within one in the contest's final seconds. Ockimey hit three clutch free throws to seal the deal for the visitors.

Denzel Primus-Devonish recorded 20 points for Pace to lead all scorers, and teammate Keon Williams chipped in with 14 to go with a game-high 15 caroms. St. Thomas Aquinas shot 45% from the floor (25-55) while holding its foes to just 36% on 19-53 shooting. The Setters outrebounded STAC by a 40-33 margin.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 as they resume conference play at Molloy College, travel to Greenvale, New York to take on C.W.
