Spartans Men's Hoops Ends Season with 81-63 Defeat at Queens

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team led for much of the first half but faded late in a season-ending 81-63 East Coast Conference loss at Queens College. Justin Brown led the Spartans with a game-high 25 points in his final collegiate game but STAC fell to 5-23 overall, 5-13 in the ECC while Queens improved to 11-15, 11-7.

STAC bolted from the gate early, with a TJ Jones trey leading the Spartans to the first seven points of the evening. Queens battled back but the Spartans maintained the lead and matched it on a Dane Dixon lay-up to make the score 25-18 with eight minutes to play in the first half.

Queens would then take charge, embarking on a 17-4 run that staked the hosts to a 35-29 advantage. The Spartans would trim that deficit to one before settling for a 31-28 margin at halftime.

After the break the Knights would score seven of the first eight points to open a nine-point advantage, but a Brown three-pointer would cap a 9-3 STAC burst to narrow the gap to 53-50. Queens would not be denied, however, answering with a 12-2 run of their own and pull away in the waning minutes.

Jones added 15 points for STAC, with Patrick Parker pacing four Knights in double-figures with 24 points. Abe Akanmu (13), Patrick Modzelewski (10), and Pat Piasecki (10) also contributed to the Queens victory.

In addition to Brown, Spartan seniors playing their final game included Dane Dixon, Nick Lopez, Flynn McFadden, and Charlie Van Deven.
