Spartans Stall Late, Fall at Roberts Wesleyan, 61-48

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team saw Roberts Wesleyan record the last 17 points to erase a STAC lead and claim a 61-48 East Coast Conference decision and the Spartans have dropped four straight to fall to 4-17 overall, 4-8 in the ECC. Roberts improved to 7-14, 4-9 with the victory.

After taking the ride to Rochester, NY, to play Roberts for the first time, the Spartans offense was late to arrive, as they posted just six points over the first 13 minutes of play, yet remained within striking distance at 13-6. The scoring woes continued until Omar Kellman hit a basket and-one with exactly five minutes remaining to pull the Spartans to within 18-11. The hosts would remain in control, taking a 25-18 lead into the locker room at halftime.

With STAC trailing 27-21, Justin Brown would convert an "and-one" to jump start the visitors' attack. The Spartans would embark on a 13-0 tear to take their first lead of the night, opening a 34-27 lead in the process. A Dane Dixon free throw would give STAC a 45-38 lead with just over five minutes left, but things would go south in a hurry for the visitors.

Roberts recorded the next six points to draw within one before Justin Brown answered with a lay-up and converted a foul shot to make the score 48-44 with just over four minutes left. Those would prove to be the Spartans last points, as Tyrel Dixon and William Kemp Harris would lead the Redhawks to a 17-0 run to close out the contest and secure the win.

The Spartans return to action this Saturday, February 9, when they host the University of the District of Columbia at Aquinas Hall. The East Coast Conference twin bill starts with women's action at 1:00, followed by the men's game, with both contests carried live on video as well as LiveStats.
