Late Fade Costs Spartans in 67-58 Defeat at Georgian Court

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team suffered a 67-58 loss in a non-conference contest at Georgian Court University. Alushula Odongo led the Spartans with 13 points as his team fell to 6-7 overall, with GCU improving to 3-11 on the season.

STAC started the evening in promising fashion, with six different players combining to stake the Spartans to an early 16-2 advantage after seven minutes of play. The margin was never less than double-figures for the remainder of the half, which saw the visitors carry a 41-26 lead into the locker room.

A Justin Reyes dunk would give STAC a seemingly-comfortable 50-32 cushion with 15 minutes to play, but the Spartans would suddenly go cold while the hosts would catch fire. The Lions reeled off the next eight points to draw to within 50-40, and that momentum would carry through the rest of the contest. In all, GCU would close with a 35-8 run, with the Spartans recording just two field goals over the final 15 minute span.

Reyes (11 points) and Chaz Watler (10) joined Odongo in double figures for St. Thomas Aquinas. Keith Hughes led the Lions comeback with a game-high 22 points to go with 15 rebounds, as the hosts controlled the boards to the tune of a decisive 55-35 margin on the night.

The Spartans will have a quick turnaround, returning to Aquinas Hall to host New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) on Wednesday, January 7. Tipoff time is scheduled for approximately 8:00 pm, as the back end of an East Coast Conference double-header featuring the women's teams starting at 6:00 pm.
