Spartans Rally Past Roberts Wesleyan for Weekend Sweep, 62-57

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team won its second game in as many days, topping Roberts Wesleyan, 62-57 in an East Coast Conference tilt at Aquinas Hall. Justin Reyes netted 15 for STAC as the Spartans moved back over .500 at 9-8 overall, while taking sole possession of third place in the ECC standings with a 6-2 record. RWC dropped to 7-6, 3-4 with the loss.

Neither team would be at a fatigue disadvantage, with each having played the night before, but the Spartans started strong. STAC jumped to an early 11-4 lead but Roberts Wesleyan would return fire, taking a 28-23 advantage before entering the halftime lockerroom ahead by 31-26 count.

That lead would grow to as many as nine at 35-26 after the break, but the Spartans would rally. A pair of Aaron Cust layups would key a 15-4 run, putting the Spartans back on top 47-44 with nine minutes left. The lead would change hands several times thereafter, until a Reyes bucket gave the hosts a lead they would not relinquish at 55-53 with 3:17 to play. The Redhawks would claw back to within one point in the final seconds but four straight Spartan free throws provided the final margin.

Along with his 15 points, Reyes pulled 11 rebounds while Aaron Cust (12 points), Chaz Watler (11) and Shaq McFarlan (10) balanced the scoring. Juled de Courtenay was a force on the boards with a game-high 15 caroms. Isaac Medeiros led the way for the Redhawks with 13 points.

The Spartans return home on Tuesday, January 20, hosting Mercy College in another ECC affair at Aquinas Hall. The game is the back end of a twin bill featuring the women's teams starting at 6:00 pm, followed by the men's game at approximately 8:00 pm.
