Tenacious Pressure Lifts #8 Spartans to 90-74 Victory at Holy Family

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team rolled to a 90-74 win in a non-conference showdown at Holy Family University. Chaz Watler led the way with 21 points as the #8 Nationally Ranked Spartans improved to 3-0, with Holy Family falling to 0-3. St. Thomas Aquinas has now won 21 consecutive regular season games.

STAC jumped from the gate early with a 10-2 lead, but Holy Family drew back to within 12-11. Shaq McFarlan hit a pair of buckets to cap a 14-2 run, opening a 42-23 advantage, and the visitors' pressing defense broke the game open as Ross Greenfield scored three straight baskets and recorded 13 first half points with STAC opening a stunning 51- 30 lead at halftime against the team that was the top seed in the East Region one year ago.

A 23-9 outburst to start the season half all but put the game away as that lead would imcrease to 74-39 midway through the second half. The Tigers posted a furious late finish, cutting the deficit to 80-70, but that's as close as the hosts would get. Jon Lawton added 16 points and James Mitchell and Justin Reyes added 12 each for the Spartans, with Watler chipping in 10 assists and Greenfield grabbing 10 caroms. HFU's Dyllon Hudson-Emory leading all scorers with 33, while teammate Randy Bell kicked in 23. STAC forced 15 turnovers and held their foes to just 34% (24-of-70) from the field.

The Spartans return to action next Tuesday night, November 22, when Dominican College pays a visit to Aquinas Hall for a 7:00 pm tip. That is the first of three straight at home, with Stonehill coming in for a big regional showdown on Sunday, November 27, and the East Coast Conference schedule opening against Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday, November 30.
