Cust, Watler Spark Spartans to 105-75 Victory over Georgian Court

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team closed the home regular-season schedule with a non-conference 105-75 victory over Georgian Court University at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans have won three straight and 12-of-13 overall, improving to 22-5 on the season, while Georgian Court slipped to 1-26.

STAC will close out the regular season with an East Coast Conference bout against Mercy College at Westchester Community College on Wednesday night, and will then enjoy a bye into the ECC Tournament semi-finals on Saturday, March 4. A victory on Wednesday would secure the Regular Season Championship and top seed in the conference tourney, which will be held at the University of Bridgeport.

Pregame ceremonies honored seniors Aaron Cust and Chaz Watler, and both carried their celebrations onto the court with 23 and 20 points respectively. During their four year tenure at St. Thomas Aquinas, Cust and Watler have seen their squad amass an 85-35 record to date, with ECC Final appearances in each of the past three seasons. In addition, thanks to his prolific scoring of late, Cust now stands within 21 points of the 1,000 point career plateau.

Both Senior Day honorees helped STAC jump on top early and a PJ Alkins three staked the hosts to a 17-8 advantage. An 8-0 run put the hosts up 30-14 and the Spartans led by as many as 21 before GCU closed the first half with a 9-0 run, trimming the gap to just 54-42.

Nicola Vujovic drew the Lions to within 56-45 with an early three-point play, but STAC exploded for a 19-3 run in a span of just over three minutes, putting the contest out of reach for good. Adam Koziol came off the bench to score 13 points, with Dan Wilson and Justin Reyes adding 12 each, and James Mitchell contributing 11 as the hosts had six scorers reach double-figures. Vujovic was the hot hand for Georigan Court with a game high 26.
