Rally Comes Up Short as Spartans Fall to Bridgeport, 74-65

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team dropped a 74-65 East Coast Conference battle to the University of Bridgeport at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans remain in second place in the ECC standings, falling to 21-6 overall and 12-3 in league play. Bridgeport solidified its hold on first place, improving to 21-4, 14-1.

Bridgeport jumped out to a quick 9-2 advantage on a D'Vonne Trumbo jumper, and led throughout the first half, taking a 36-27 lead into intermission. They extended that gap to as many as 11 points on a Sam Jospeh jumper at 18:50 to make the tally 40-29, but the Spartans would mount an answer.

Shaq McFarlan and Justin Reyes stepped up to lead a 15-2 run, which gave STAC a 44-42 lead on a James Mitchell jumper. A handful of lead changes ensued, with the score standing tied at 49-49 just past the midway point. Trumbo broke the tie from long range, and Vaqas Ikbal recorded six straight points as the Purple Knights closed with a 9-2 run to seal the victory.

Justin Reyes recorded game highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Shaq McFarlan added 16 for the hosts. Sharif Cobb led a balanced Bridgeport attack with 16 points.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, February 14, hosting New York Institute of Technology in an East Coast Conference battle at Aquinas Hall. Game time is approximately 7:30 as the back end of double-header action with the women's teams squaring off at 5:30. They then travel to face LIU Post on Saturday, February 17, before closing out the regular season against the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, February 24. Senior Day festivities precede each game, with women's play starting at 1:00 pm.
