Six Spartans Score in Double-Figures as Men's Basketball Bests Bridgeport, 109-92

Bridgeport, Conn. - Six Spartans scored in double-figures helping the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team defeat the University of Bridgeport, 109-92 on Wednesday evening at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium. STAC improves to 14-4 and 7-1 in the ECC, while the Purple Knights drop to 7-11 and 4-5 in conference play.

Ten different players registered a point for the Spartans, with Elijah Bovell leading the way with 19 points. Antonio Vendola (17pts), Demetre Roberts (15pts), Osbel Caraballo (14pts), Jamal Barnes (13pts) and DeVante Jamison (12pts) also registered double-digit point totals. Malcom Moye led all scorers in the contest, dropping 44 points for Bridgeport.

STAC shot 57.7 percent from the field (45-78) in the conference tilt, while making 14-of-35 buckets from behind the arc. Bridgeport shot 47.8% (33-69) and 13-for-37 from three.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • 10 different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison and Demetre Roberts led the Spartans with eight assists each on the night.
  • Elijah Bovell made 9 of his 13 field goal attempts. Demetre Roberts went 6-for-11 from the floor.
  • The Spartans were 23-43 (53.5%) from the field and 10-24 (41.7%) from downtown in the first half and 22-35 (62.9%) from the floor and 4-11 (36.4%) from three in the second half.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 11 steals in the contest, with Bridgeport turning the ball over on 23 different occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over Bridgeport: Points off of Turnovers (35-21), Points in the Paint (56-30) and Bench Points (51-23).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Bridgeport opened the game, leading 7-3, before the Spartans responded and took an lead 8-7 at the 17:43 mark. The teams would battle for the next seven minutes, trading scoring opportunities and keeping score close.
  • However, STAC would begin to pull away, getting defensive stops on one end of the court and scoring on consecutive trips down on the other end of the floor, taking a eleven-point lead (31-20). The visitors in maroon and gold extended their lead to 16 (61-45) late in the stanza, before taking a 61-47 advantage to the locker room at the break.
  • Jamal Barnes and Demetre Roberts paced the offense for the Spartans with 11 points each. Meanwhile, Malcom Moye recorded 21 points for Bridgeport, to lead all scorers in the first half.
  • In the second half, St. Thomas Aquinas continued to maintain a double-digit lead on the scoreboard, with the Spartans leading by as much as 24 points (104-80) late in regulation.
  • Antonio Vendola (12pts) and Elijah Bovell (10pts) were the hot shooters for STAC in the frame, while Malcom Moye (23pts) continued to have the magic touch for UB.
