Late Saint Anselm Rally Sinks STAC Men's Basketball, 76-73

Manchester, N.H. - Despite three Spartans scoring in double-figures, the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team dropped a hard-fought 76-73 decision to Saint Anselm College on Sunday afternoon at Stoutenburgh Gym.

The Spartans (4-3) see their win streak ended at two games, while the Hawks (2-2) have now won back-to-back contests.

Senior Osbel Caraballo (Bolivar Venezuela) had a game-high 22 points. Sophomore Jamal Barnes (Temple Hills, Md.) posted 15 points and senior Demetre Roberts (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) had 14 points.

Saint Anselm was led by Matt Becker, who posted a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds, Miles Tention with 20 points and Chris Paul with 15 points.

The Spartans opened the game with a 15-7 lead, leading to a Saint Anselm timeout with 13:15 on the clock. The Hawks later cut the deficit to three, 17-14, following a Matt Becker jump shot with 10:34 left. STAC ensued with a 11-4 run to increase the lead to double-digits, 28-18, with just over seven minutes left in the half.

The Hawks cut the deficit to three, 30-27, following a Gustav Suhr-Jessen jumper with 3:10 on the clock. The visitors in maroon and gold followed with four straight points to take a seven-point lead, 34-27, with 1:41 remaining in the half. A pair of Chris Paul free throws for the Hawks and a Demetre Roberts jump shot for STAC kept the Saint Anselm deficit to seven at 36-29, heading into halftime.

Both teams would open the half, trading baskets for the first six and a half minutes of action, with Saint Anselm getting as close as four points, before St. Thomas Aquinas increased their lead back to 10, 51-41, with 13:12 left to play. The Hawks battled back from multiple double-digit deficits, including a 12-point differential with just over five and a half minutes left in the second half, to get within one point on a Chris Paul free throw with 3:21 to go in the contest. St. Thomas Aquinas then went back up by three on a Osbel Caraballo jumper, before Matt Becker tied the game on a three-pointer at the 2:12 mark. Two made free throws by Jamal Barnes made it a 71-69 STAC advantage, but Josh Menard would give the host Hawks a lead they wouldn't relinquish, via a trey to make it 72-71. Four Miles Tention free throws sandwiched between a Demetre Roberts layup and missed free-throw kept the Saint Anselm in command of the game until the final buzzer.

St. Thomas Aquinas shot 40.0 percent (28-for-70) from the floor, 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from downtown and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the foul line. Saint Anselm shot 43.9 percent (25-for-57) from the floor, 40.0 percent (10-for-25) from beyond the arc and 80.0 percent (16-for-20) from the foul line. The Hawks held a 40-37 edge on the glass, while the Spartans held the advantage in points in the paint, 34-24.

STAC returns to action on Wednesday, December 1, visiting Stonehill College for a 7pm tilt in Easton, Massachusetts.
