Spartans Win Streak Ends in 73-61 Setback to Daemen

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team saw its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 73-61 setback to Daemen College at Aquinas Hall Gym on Friday evening.

STAC falls to 12-4, 5-1 ECC on the season while the Wildcats improve to 11-6, 8-0.

Demetre Roberts posted 18 points and Osbel Caraballo recorded 12 points on the evening for the Spartans, while Kyle Harris (19 points), Sean Fasoyiro (15 points) and Andrew Sischo (12 points) all scored in double-figures for Daemen.

STAC shot 36.5 percent from the field (23-63) in the conference tilt, while Daemen shot 52.0 percent (26-50) from the floor and 50.0 percent (13-26) from behind the arc.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS: 

  • Eight different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Grant Singleton led the Spartans with seven assists.
  • Demetre Roberts made 6 of his 12 field goal attempts in the game, with Osbel Caraballo going 5-for-9.
  • The Spartans were 10-33 (30.3%) from the field in the first half and 13-30 (43.3%) in the second half.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 13 steals on the night, while forcing 27 Daemen turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Daemen opened the first half with an 8-0 lead, before STAC battled back to cut the deficit to 8-6.
  • Back and forth action between the teams would lead to the visiting Wildcats taking a seven-point advantage (21-14) with just under eight and a half minutes to play in the opening frame.
  • In the final five minutes of the stanza, Daemen would hold multiple 10-point margins on the scoreboard and maintained a seven-point lead (33-26) at the break.
  • Demetre Roberts paced the offense for the Spartans in the first half, with seven points, while both Andrew Mason and Andrew Sischo registered eight points for the visitors from Western New York.
  • STAC opened the second half trading buckets with Daemen and was able to get back within one point (35-34) with just under 17 minutes left in the game.
  • However, the Wildcats would go on a 26-6 run over the next eight minutes to take its largest lead of the game, a 21-point advantage, at 61-40.
  • The Spartans would chip away at the sizeable Daemen lead and got a little help along the way, as star big man Andrew Sischo would foul out for the Wildcats, opening the door to a potential STAC comeback. 
  • St. Thomas Aquinas closed the deficit to six (67-61) with 1:34 remaining in regulation. However, the visitors would hit their shots each trip down the floor in the final minute to extend the lead back to 12 and clinch the victory.
  • STAC's bench scored 18 of the team's 61 total points.
  • The Spartans picked up 26 points in the paint, while Daemen recorded 22.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas held the edge in points off of turnovers, 26-10.
