Singleton Hits 1,000 Point Mark as Spartans Roll to 113-73 Victory over District of Columbia

Sparkill, N.Y. - Grant Singleton scored his 1000th career point as a member of the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team on Wednesday evening, as the Spartans rolled to a 113-73 victory over the University of the District of Columbia at Aquinas Hall.

STAC improves to 23-4 and 16-1 in the ECC on the season, winning its 11th straight contest and keeping pace with conference foe Daemen College in the ECC standings. Meanwhile, UDC drops to 8-19 and 7-10 in conference play.

Demetre Roberts led the Spartan offense with 20 points, while Grant Singleton (19 points), Elijah Bovell (19 points), Jamal Barnes (16 points) and Jerrel Kelly (10 points) also scored in double figures. Jahmir Marable-Williams (15 points), Hartnel Haye (14 points) and Deonte Hicks (13 points) paced the Firebirds.

STAC shot 63.4 percent from the field (45-71) and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc (11-22), while UDC shot 50.0 percent (28-56) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the Spartans with six assists on the evening.
  • Grant Singleton made 7 of his 8 field goal attempts, while Elijah Bovell went 8-for-13 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded District of Columbia 35-22 in 40 minutes of action, with Sean Moore grabbing seven boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up seven steals in the contest, with the Firebirds turning the ball over on 17 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in four team statistical categories over District of Columbia: Points off of Turnovers (31-11), Second Chance Points (13-9), Points in the Paint (64-30) and Bench Points (48-22).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC raced out to 9-0, but UDC battled back to go on a 9-4 run and only trail 13-9 at the first media timeout of the game.
  • Grant Singleton, six points shy of the 1,000 point mark, was able to reach the career mark early on in the first half, via a four-point play (three-point field goal and free-throw) and a layup. Singleton is the 36th Spartan in the history of the Men's Basketball program to reach the milestone.
  • The teams battled for much of the rest of the opening stanza, with UDC staying within five points on the scoreboard, before the Spartans went on a 19-4 run of their own to take a 20-point advantage at 49-29.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas put together another late 10-5 run to lead 59-34 at the halftime break.
  • Grant Singleton led all scorers with 15 first half points for STAC, while Juanye Colon had nine points for UDC.
  • Following the halftime break, St. Thomas Aquinas would continue to pour it on offensively, building a 32-point (78-46) margin early on in the stanza.
  • Despite the Firebirds continued scoring throughout the second half, the Spartans would maintain double-digit advantages with ease. 
  • STAC would get its largest lead of the contest late (43 points) at 111-68 and take the victory, 113-73.
