Crim and Haye Sink Late Free Throws To Push STAC Past Mercy, 75-73

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Deshawne Crim and Hartnel Haye each sank free throws in the waning moments of Saturday's East Coast Conference contest with Mercy University to send the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team to their sixth straight victory, a thrilling 75-73 triumph over the host Mavericks at the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center in Westchester County.

STAC improves to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in ECC play, while Mercy falls to 5-12 and 4-4.

Luis Risquez and Troy'reon Ramos each recorded a team-high 15 points for the maroon and gold, while teammate Hartnel Haye (12 points) also factored in the Spartans' totals by scoring in double figures. Meanwhile, Ethan Robertson led all scorers, tallying 22 points for the Mavericks.

STAC shot 41.2 percent from the field (28-68), while Mercy shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the conference contest. 
  • Derrick James led the maroon and gold with five assists on the day.
  • Luis Risquez hit 6 of his 11 field goal attempts and 2-of-3 free throws. Meanwhile, Troy'reon Ramos went 5-of-7 from the floor, 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe.
  • Mercy out-rebounded STAC by a 41-36 margin, with Hartnel Haye grabbing a game-high eight boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas swiped 15 steals, with the Mavericks turning the ball over on 23 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over Mercy: Second Chance Points (20-11), Points in the Paint (44-34) and Bench Points (23-5).
  • The game featured eight ties and six lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under six minutes to play in the opening half, when Spartans led by 10 points, 33-23, on a Luis Risquez layup.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas took a 44-37 halftime lead into the locker room and shot 48.6 percent from the field (17-of-35).
  • Luis Risquez led all scorers with 14 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 86.0 percent (6-for-7) from the floor.
  • Saturday's victory gives STAC its 24th consecutive win against Mercy University, dating back to November 30, 2013.

MERCY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Six Mavericks logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Ethan Robertson led Mercy with 22 points, while teammates TJ Holloway (17 points), Shedrach Makanjuola (12 points) and Nathan Robertson (12 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Nathan Robertson also led Mercy with nine assists on the afternoon.
  • Ethan Robertson went 8-for-16 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the foul line. Meanwhile, Holloway went 5-for-15 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.
  • Ethan Robertson also grabbed a game-high 12 boards for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy picked up seven steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 14 separate occasions.
  • The Mavericks earned advantages in two team statistical categories over St. Thomas Aquinas: Points off Turnovers (24-22) and Fastbreak Points (22-15).
  • Mercy's largest lead of the game came with just over ten minutes to play in the opening half, when Mavericks led by eight points, 23-15, on a TJ Holloway three-point jumper.
  • Ethan Robertson led all Mavericks scorers with 13 first half points, while shooting 46.1 percent (6-for-13) from field.
