On To The Postseason! Spartans Wrap Regular Season Play With 102-75 Rout Of Mercy On Senior Day

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team put a wrap on its 2024-25 regular season schedule Saturday, with a 102-75 Senior Day rout of Mercy University at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium.

STAC improves to 22-8 overall and 13-3 within the ECC, and now prepares for the upcoming East Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. Mercy closes out the year at 7-18 and 6-10.

Prior to the Spartans regular season home finale, the maroon and gold honored its graduating class, as Tyshon Judge, Zion Ruckard, Hartnel Haye and Luis Risquez's collegiate careers were celebrated with on-court ceremonies, which included the athletes' families, teammates, coaches and college administrators.

When the teams got underway on the hardwood, Shaun Arnold recorded a team-high 17 points for the Spartans, while teammates Deshawne Crim (15 points), Troy'reon Ramos (12 points) and Hartnel Haye (11 points) also factored in STAC's totals with each scoring in double figures. Meanwhile, Nathan Robertson led the visiting Mavericks in scoring with a game-high 19 points.

STAC shot 49.3 percent (35-71) from the field and a blistering 95.7 percent (22-23) from the foul line, while Mercy shot 39.4 percent (26-66) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ten Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the conference contest. 
  • Tommy Kelly led the maroon and gold with four assists on the day.
  • Shaun Arnold hit 7 of his 12 field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Deshawne Crim went 4-of-6 from the floor, 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
  • STAC out-rebounded Mercy by a 46-32 margin, with Shaun Arnold also grabbing a game-high 12 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas swiped 16 steals, with the Mavericks turning the ball over on 21 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Mercy: Points off Turnovers (21-19), Second Chance Points (15-9), Points in the Paint (40-38), Fastbreak Points (13-10) and Bench Points (55-7).
  • The game featured four ties and four lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under five minutes to play in the contest, when Spartans led by 29 points, 88-59, on a Troy'reon Ramos three-point jumper.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas led Mercy 42-33 at the half and shot 42.1 percent (16-38) from the field and were a perfect 100.0 percent (7-7) from the foul line.
  • Hartnel Haye led all Spartans scorers with nine first half points, while shooting 80.0 percent (4-of-5) from the floor.
  • STAC's best shooting half came in the second stanza, as the Spartans shot 57.6 percent (19-33) from the field, 70.0 percent (7-10) from long range and 93.8 percent (15-16) from the free throw line.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas now takes its season-high seven game win streak into the postseason.

MERCY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Seven Mavericks logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Nathan Robertson led Mercy with 19 points, while Shedrach Makanjuola (15 points), Taj Chiles (13 points), Derek Long (11 points) and TJ Holloway (10 points) also scored in double figures.
  • Robertson also led Mercy with four assists on the afternoon.
  • Robertson went 8-for-18 from the floor. Meanwhile, Makanjuola went 6-for-11 from the field.
  • Nathan Robertson also grabbed a team-high eight boards for the Mavericks.
  • Mercy picked up nine steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 19 separate occasions.
  • Derek Long led all scorers with 11 first half points for the Mavericks, while shooting 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the field and 50.0 percent (3-for-6) from downtown.

No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas receives a bye into the semifinal round of the East Coast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament and will next play on Saturday, March 8, against the winner of Wednesday's first round matchup between No. 3 Queens College and No. 6 Molloy University. The Spartans and Knights or Lions will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. inside of Lumsden Gymnasium on the campus of top-seeded Daemen University in Amherst, New York.
