Spartans Win Fifth Straight In 80-59 Defeat Of Queens

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team ran their current win streak to a season-best five games on Saturday afternoon, with an 80-59 victory over Queens College at Aquinas Hall.

STAC improves to 13-6 overall and 5-2 in ECC action, while Queens slips to 7-11 and 3-3.

Luis Risquez recorded a team-high 14 points for the maroon and gold, while teammates Hartnel Haye (11 points) and Deshawne Crim (10 points) also factored in the Spartans' totals with each scoring in double figures. Meanwhile, Jade Tse led all scorers tallying 17 points for the visiting Knights.

STAC shot 38.2 percent from the field (29-76), while Queens shot 32.8 percent (20-61) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the conference contest. 
  • Derrick James and Troy'reon Ramos led the maroon and gold with three assists apiece on the day.
  • Luis Risquez hit 5 of his 9 field goal attempts and 4-of-6 free throws. Meanwhile, Hartnel Haye went 3-of-15 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.
  • STAC out-rebounded Queens 52-36 margin, with Hartnel Haye also grabbing a game-high 15 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas swiped 11 steals, with the Knights turning the ball over on 17 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Queens: Points off Turnovers (18-10), Second Chance Points (23-11), Points in the Paint (48-28), Fastbreak Points (12-10) and Bench Points (32-13).
  • The game featured three ties and six lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the game came with just under 90 seconds to play in the contest, when Spartans led by 21 points, 78-57, on a Hartnel Haye layup.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens were all square at 33-33 going into the halftime locker room.
  • Deshawne Crim led all Spartans scorers with 10 first half points, while shooting 60.0 percent (3-of-5) from the floor and 100.0 percent from both three-point (2-for-2) and the foul line (2-for-2).
  • St. Thomas Aquinas has now won 16 straight contests against Queens College going back to January 27, 2016.

QUEENS NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Jaden Pena and Shamar Chester each led Queens with two assists apiece on the afternoon.
  • Tse went 7-for-9 from the floor and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Chester went 4-for-11 from the field.
  • Shamar Chester also grabbed a team-high eight boards for the Knights.
  • Queens picked up four steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 11 separate occasions.
  • Jade Tse led all scorers with 12 first half points for the Knights, while shooting 50.0 percent (5-for-10) from field.
