The St. Thomas Aquinas College Ice Hockey team dropped a 2-1 road decision to Stevens Institute of Technology on Sunday evening at the RWJ Barnabas Health Hockey House in Newark, N.J.

In the first, Stevens Tech. was able to get on the scoreboard just 2:45 into the period as Jacob Senkewicz was able to put a Eamon Bontempo pass behind Spartan goalie Carl Lorenz, giving the Ducks a 1-0 lead. After the early tally, both sides were able to settle in and get their share of chances, but no further scoring was done in the opening twenty minutes of play.

The second period saw the home team Ducks again light the lamp, doubling the score, as Alexander Phipps put one home with assist once again going to teammate Bontempo at 4:12. Yet another back and forth period came to a close with no additional goals being scored, however this time Stevens Tech. had a 2-0 advantage.

St. Thomas Aquinas was not going to go quietly into the cool autumn night, as the Spartans tried to stage a comeback when Shaun Benson took a pass from Douglas Harrison and deposited it behind Ducks goalie Evan Senkewicz to cut the lead in half at 2-1 with just under nineteen and a half minutes to go in the contest. From then on out a helter skelter finish to the final period ensued, with the visitors trying to even things up and Stevens Tech trying to hold onto the lead or maybe even regain their comfortable two goal lead. Late in the game STAC pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker, but it was to no avail, as the Ducks would protect their slim margin to the final buzzer.

Spartan netminder Carl Lorenz (2-5) made 34 saves on the night, while Ducks goalie Evan Senkewicz picked up 28 saves in the cage to earn the victory.

Shots on goal for the game were 29 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 36 for Stevens Institute of Technology.

St. Thomas Aquinas College (3-5) now heads to Sport-O-Rama to conclude the backend of this two game home-and-home matchup with Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday, November 9th. Puck drop is set for 8:30pm.
