The St. Thomas Aquinas College Ice Hockey team clinched the first annual Catholic College Cup with an 8-5 victory over Sacred Heart University on Friday evening at Sport-O-Rama Ice Rinks in Monsey, NY. STAC clinched the Best-of-Four Series, three games to one.
The Spartans and Pioneers agreed to a Best-of Four Spring Exhibition Series, when the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) decided to cancel their 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both institutions are members of the MCHC.
Luke Broderick and Shaun Benson tallied two goals apiece, while Drew Lorenz, Pat Burns, Doug Harrison and Zach Teats also scored a goal apiece. Goalie Carl Lorenz made 35 saves in net to pick up the win, and run his record to 3-1 to close the mini season.
Prior to the contest, the Spartans recognized five seniors; James Ryan, Pat Burns, Luke Broderick, Zach Teats and Stephen Finkel for their contributions to the STAC Ice Hockey program during their time at the college.
