Fourth Quarter Rally Not Enough as Spartans Fall at Georgian Court, 7-5

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Lacrosse team fell in a non-conference contest with the Georgian Court University Lions, 7-5 on Saturday afternoon in Lakewood, NJ.

Brenton Mighty scored four times for the Spartans, while Tyler Senatore tallied a goal of his own. Ryan Mello got the start in net for STAC and made 15 saves on the day.

In first quarter action, Brenton Mighty opened the scoring for the Spartans just 3:42 into the game, giving STAC a 1-0 lead. Georgian Court responded a little over a minute later, as Randy Collins squared things up at one goal apiece. Tanner Lee then gave the Lions the lead with just under five and a half minutes left in the opening frame, pushing the score to 2-1 GCU at the end of one.

Georgian Court played a strong second and third quarter, scoring five goals over the two stanzas and keeping the Spartans off of the scoreboard, as P.J. Saracino, Ryder Verdoni, Daniel Burnham (2) and Edward Countryman all lit the lamp for the blue, white and gold, extending the Lion lead to 7-1 through three.

However, STAC was not going to just go quietly into the South Jersey afternoon and Brenton Mighty led the Spartan charge, scoring three more times in the final quarter, while teammate Tyler Senatore chipped in a goal himself making it a 7-5 GCU lead. The Lions were kept off of the stat sheet in the fourth, but their defense held serve in the final minutes of the contest to preserve the victory for Georgian Court

STAC goalie Ryan Mello (L, 1-2) 60:00, tended the Spartan goal, while Austin Geissel (W, 3-3) 60:00, stopped 9 of 14 shots faced for the Lions.

Georgian Court had a 46-24 shots advantage for the game.

St. Thomas Aquinas College (1-2) returns home to face Felician College on Wednesday, March 20 at Spartan Field. Opening face-off is scheduled for 4pm.
