HOW IT HAPPENED

  • STAC opened the match with three straight goals, as Ryan Christensen, Jonathan Farley and Reno Molina found the back of the cage with early first quarter tallies to lead 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining in the stanza.
  • The host Chargers quickly responded with a Cole Vencak strike to get themselves on the scoreboard at 3-1.
  • Ryan Christensen and John Pena closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals in the final minute of play to increase the Spartans lead to 5-1.
  • Dominican posted the only goals of the second quarter, as Sean Cosgrove beat STAC netminder Craig Peavy and the beginning and end of the frame to close the deficit to 5-3 at halftime.
  • When the teams returned to the field for third quarter action, it only took nine seconds for the Chargers to score their fourth goal of the match, courtesy of William Gordon to get within one at 5-4.
  • However, the Spartans answered with two goals of their own, with Austin Palen and Jonathan Farley each finding the back of the cage with their shots to increase their advantage to 7-4.

  • A pair of goals from John Pena and Jonathan Farley in the final nine minutes of the third quarter put the maroon and gold ahead by four, 9-5, going into the final period of regulation.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas struck for an early fourth quarter goal Reno Molina tallied his second of the afternoon to make it 10-5.
  • The Chargers looked to rally late in the contest, getting consecutive goals from Daniel Carson, to give him a hat-trick and close the gap on the scoreboard to 10-7.
  • Despite an offensive surge by Dominican, Spartans goalie Craig Peavy came up with several key stops, while his teammates helped the cause by scooping up multiple ground balls to forces changes of possession on multiple occasions in order to milk time off of the clock and take the non-conference triumph.
