
Sparkill, N.Y. - Nicola Greer scored his second goal of the afternoon with 2:13 left in overtime on Tuesday, leading the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Lacrosse team to a thrilling 12-11 victory over Post University in a back-and-forth contest at Spartan Field. Five different Spartans tallied a goal in the triumph.
STAC moves to 2-2 on the season, while Post falls to 2-2.
Lucas Mullen led STAC's offense with four goals and three assists on the afternoon, while Austin Maybee struck for four goals for the maroon and gold. Nicola Greer (2 goals), Lou Takacs (1 goal, 1 assist) and Cam Wallace (1 goal) also contributed to the Spartans totals. Hayden Gaudette (W, 2-2) got the start in the cage for St. Thomas Aquinas and stopped 14 of 25 shots faced to earn his second victory of the campaign.
On the other end of the field, Post was led by Hunter McCarty, who tallied four goals and an assist, while Leighton Cook scored three goals and added a helper and Robbie McGrayne netted three goals. Van George added to the totals on the scoreboard for the Eagles with a goal of his own. Goalie Liam McCurry (L, 1-2) made 12 stops on 24 shots sent his way on the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Back-to-back goals by Lucas Mullen in the opening moments of Tuesday's non-conference matchup gave STAC a quick 2-0 advantage
- Post then struck back with three straight goals courtesy of Robbie McGrayne and Leighton Cook (2) to take its first lead of the day at 3-2.
- Lucas Mullen's hat trick tally knotted things up at 3-3, before Hunter McCarty scored a shorthanded marker to put the Eagles back up by one, 4-3, at the end of the first quarter.
- Second quarter action was highlighted by the maroon and gold scoring bookend goals by Lou Takacs and Austin Maybe to start and end the stanza, with Post's Robbie McGrayne and Hunter McCarty lighting the lamp in between to make it 6-5 Eagles at the half.
- After the break, the teams exchanged a pair of goals each, as Cam Wallace and Austin Maybee tallied for the hosts and Hunter McCarty scored twice more for the visitors to keep Post in the lead at 8-7.
- However, Austin Maybee would join the hat trick parade with his third of the day in the final seconds of the third quarter to even things at 8-8 with 15 minutes to play in regulation.
- Things couldn't have started any better for Post in the fourth quarter, as Robbie McGrayne and Leighton Cook would each find the back of the net with hat trick goals of their own to put the Eagles in front, 10-8.
- Lucas Mullen and Nicola Greer then scored a goal apiece on the man advantage to even things up at 10-10 with just under two minutes to play.
- Post's Van George answered for his team, scoring with less than 90 seconds to play to put the visitors back up at 11-10.
- Down a man and with time running out on the Spartans, Austin Maybee somehow took a feed from teammate Ethan Urbanski and put it to the back of the cage, tying the match at 11-11 with just over ten seconds left, forcing overtime.
- In the extra session, it would be the man of the hour, Nicola Greer taking a pass from Lucas Mullen and putting it home to send both the STAC bench and the large crowd in attendance into a loud and joyous celebration, as St. Thomas Aquinas slipped past Post, 12-11, in their 2025 home opener.
