Spartans End in 1-1 Draw Against UDC Firebirds

Jones's header sends STAC into OT

The St. Thomas Aquinas men's soccer team traveled to Washington, DC for a non conference game against the University of the District of Columbia last evening.  The Spartans fell behind 1-0 early in the game but were able to rally back behind a goal by senior Gerald Jones to end regulation in a 1-1 tie.

STAC came out aggressive after having a week to recover from their 2-1 OT loss to Queens College last Saturday.  The Spartans out shot the Firebirds 24-7 for the game.  STAC pressured UDC's defense early on but were unable to connect on their 11 shot attempt in the first half.  The Firebird's Akeil Befon scored at the 25:05 mark off a cross from Kevin Santos, ending the half 1-0.

STAC continued their strong attack in the second half and found success as Jones headed in a goal off a free kick from senior Steven Rozycki with 15 minutes remaining in the game.  The goal was enough to carry the Spartans into their fourth overtime game of the season.  Neither team was able to convert on their shot attempts within two overtime periods ending the game 1-1.

STAC goalkeeper Nicholas Croce played the entire 110 minutes and recorded 3 saves.  The Spartans will have another week off as they prepare for the highly anticipated game against regionally ranked University of Bridgeport on October 11th.
