Spartans Top NYIT in NCAA Tournament, 4-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas men's soccer team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 with a 4-1 win over NYIT this afternoon. Daniel Davren scored a goal just 10 minutes into action to get the Spartans rolling. Remington Lee added two goals and Sean Reily had one.  Andrew Tartara had two saves for STAC.

Davren's goal came off an assist from Robert Stevens as he dribbles to the right box and fired a shot to the left corner. The Spartans held onto a 1-0 lead into halftime as they outshot the Bears, 3-2. 

Lee scored his first goal off a cross from Joe Connolly early in the second half. The Spartans added their third goal just five minutes later as Reily chipped in a goal off a missed header attempt by Connolly. 

The Bears scored their lone goal at the 64 minute mark as Harvey Houpe scored off a rebound.  STAC continued to attack adding their fourth goal in the final minute of play as Lee fired a shot into the right corner.

The Spartans outshot the Bears 6-5 for the game. Joe Caccavalle had three saves for NYIT. STAC will now face the host team and #1 seed, Franklin Pierce University on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Today's win was the first NCAA victory in the program's history. STAC is now 11-3-4 and will play for a chance to advance to the Elite Eight.
