Men's Soccer Falls Short at Assumption, 1-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the 2012 season, as Assumption College came away with a 1-0 victory in Worcester, Mass., on Wednesday evening. With the setback the Spartans stand at 1-1-1, while the contest was the season opener for Assumption.

STAC set the tone for the first half, outshooting the hosts by a 7-1 margin over the first 45 minutes, but it was a penalty kick taken by Tom Carroll at the 32:22 mark that couldn't be stopped by Spartan keeper Andrew Tartara and held up as the game's lone marker.

While the Grayhounds held the edge in corner kicks by 6-4, STAC dominated the shot tally by an 11-3 margin, though they were unable to put enough on frame and couldn't find a way past Assumption goalkeeper Dana King.

The Spartans return to action this coming Saturday, September 8, for their 2012 home opener at Eugene Levy Memorial Park in Pomona, NY. STAC's men's squad will hit the pitch in a 2:30 start against Lock Haven University, in the back end of a Home Opening double-header which will see the two schools' women's squads square off at 12:30 pm.
