Early Surge Leads Men's Soccer to 2-1 Victory over Caldwell

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team rode a pair of first half goals to a 2-1 victory over Caldwell College at Torne Valley Sports Complex. The non-conference victory lifts STAC's record to 3-5-3, while Caldwell fell to 4-5-1 on the season.

St. Thomas Aquinas entered the evening winless in its last six games (0-4-2) while Caldwell had won four straight, but the Spartans wasted little time in grabbing an early edge. Laurie Child's touch pass found James Earl, who sent a pretty shot into the far corner of the net to put STAC ahead after just 10:48 of play.

Child would also have a hand in the next marker, feeding Michael Corbi, whose chip found the back of the net at 28:30. The Spartans had more opportunities, outshooting the Cougars 8-3 in the first half but Caldwell keeper Brian Agostini made five saves to keep the contest within reach.

Caldwell found its wind in the second half and put on pressure before getting on the board at the 70:32 mark when Santiago Benites' shot just got past STAC netminder Andrew Tartara and tucked into the corner of the net. As the visitors pressed for the equalizer, this time it was Tartara coming up big, recording four of his five saves in the second half to preserve the win.

The men's soccer team will be back in action this Sunday, October 14, when they host Lock Haven University in a non-conference tilt at Torne Valley Sports Complex, with game time slated for 2:00 pm.
