Men's Soccer Blanked in Home Opener, 2-0 to Concordia

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team played its third game in five days and never got on track, falling to Concordia College in a 2-0 decision at Rockland Community College. The non-conference setback drops the Spartans to 2-3-2 overall, while Concordia improves to 2-5-1 on the season.

Neither team generated much offense in the first half but the visitors netted the lone goal as Courtney Cunningham took a cross off a free kick from Mario Fantozzi and found the twine behind STAC netminder Nicholas Palumbo at the 29:50 mark.

It was the Clippers again hitting mesh early in the second half when Jonathan Short converted a feed from Rasheem Eccleston at  47:16 to put the visitors up a pair. The Spartans showed flurries of offense but were turned away by Concordia goalkeeper Ruel Gordon, who recorded nine saves - seven in the second half - to preserve the clean sheet.

STAC outshot the Clippers by a 15-12 edge while the visitors took a decisive 8-1 margin in corner kicks. Palumbo recorded four saves in being tagged with the loss in his first start of the season for St. Thomas Aquinas.

The weary Spartans will now enjoy a few days off before returning to action this Saturday, September 29 in a scheduled home East Coast Conference double-header with the women's team against LIU-Post.
