Top-Ranked LIU Post Defeats STAC Men's Soccer, 5-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team fell to a 5-1 defeat against LIU Post in an East Coast Conference tilt at Spartan Field. Post entered the game ranked #1 in the NCSAA Division II National Rankings. The Spartans have now dropped four straight to stand at 4-6-1 overall and 2-5 in ECC play, with LIU Post remaining perfect at 14-0-0, 7-0-0.

Playing without leading scorer Michael Corbi due to a red card in the previous game, STAC was at a disadvantage from the outset but battled despite the Pioneers' relentless attack. The Spartans' best opportunity came on a partial breakaway by Jack Legg in the opening minutes, but his attempt was turned aside.

Post took charge with three first half goals, with Jonathon Watkin, Matias Ruiz and Eiving Austboe all hitting net in the first 45. David Kone gave the hosts a glimmer of hope in the 61st minute, converting a feed from Legg to trim the margin to 3-1. The visitors would prove to be too much on this day, with Ruiz posting his second goal and Vincent Tavernese rounding out the scoring in the waning minutes.

Nathan Mangione was tested throughout the day in the STAC net, turning aside eight shots. Marco Jorgensen recorded the start and the win for the Pioneers, with Mathias Spinnars finishing up in relief.

The Spartans will be back in action this Tuesday, October 22, playing a rare road game at Holy Family in a 3:30 start. They will then return to play their final four games of the season at Spartan Field.
