Late Surge Not Enough as STAC Men's Soccer Falls to Concordia, 4-3

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team staged a furious comeback attempt before falling to Concordia College, 4-3, at Spartan Field. Jack Legg recorded a goal and an assist for the Spartans, who fell to 6-7-1 overall while Concordia improved to 8-6-1.

Coming off a stirring, last-second, 6-5 win over Molloy on Saturday, the Spartans got off to a sluggish start against Concordia. Ovan Oakley was the man on the spot for the Clippers, netting three first-half goals to give the visitors a comfortable lead.

STAC would regain its composure after the break, with Legg scoring on a Julius Werner pass at 52:50 to cut the deficit to 3-1. Oakley would not be denied, however, hammering his fourth goal of the day home just 10 minutes later to reestablish the three-goal cushion.

Daouda Kone then scored from the top of the box on an assist from Legg, giving the Spartans life at the 67:49 mark. Still trailing by two, St. Thomas Aquinas continued to apply pressure with the payoff coming at 83:22 when Robert Stevens sent a long ball down the middle of the field to be headed artfully into the Concordia net by Michael Corbi, trimming the score to 4-3.

Hoping for another late comeback, the Spartans pressured the Clipper goal in the final seconds and had a pair of golden opportunities, only to come up empty in the one-goal setback. Ruel Gordon was strongly tested in the Concordia net, making 14 saves, while STAC's Aiden Tansey turned aside four shots.

The Spartans return to action on Friday, November 1, taking on Roberts Wesleyan in an East Coast Conference match-up. The contest starts at 2:30 pm as the back end of a double-header with the women's squad, starting at noon. Both games will also feature Senior Day festivities, with pre-game ceremonies to be held for each.
