STAC Men's Soccer Earns 2-2 Tie with New Haven

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team rode a Sean DeVito goal in the final 20 minutes to a 2-2 tie against the University of New Haven at Spartan Field. Both teams now stand at 0-1-1 on the season after the non-conference draw.

After being shut out in their opener against Bloomsburg University on Wednesday, the Spartans wasted little time getting on the board when Michael Corbi took a feed from Julius Werner and sent it into the far corner of the net to put the hosts on top at the 4:28 mark.

New Haven would counter on a goal from Sal DiTommaso just over four minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, but after an eventful start the teams would play scoreless soccer for the remainder of the half.

This time it was the Chargers grabbing the early momentum on a Will Richard goal less than four minutes after the break to give the visitors their first lead of the afternoon.

Scoring chances became few and far between for St. Thomas Aquinas, but they utilized a perfect throw-in from Robert Hirt, finding DiVito at the six-yard box to tap it home and bring things back to even in the 71st minute.

While there was no further scoring, there was certainly no lack of drama. UNH applied consistent pressure in the final minutes of regulation, with a couple of good scoring chances in front of STAC netminder Nathan Mangione and a flurry of corner kicks that saw them hold a commanding 10-1 lead in that category after 90 minutes.

For the Spartans, the break couldn't come at a better time as the momentum quickly shifted to the maroon and gold. After New Haven held a 12-7 shot advantage through regulation, the 10-minute extra sessions belonged to STAC, with a commanding 6-1 shots edge.

In the waning minutes of the second OT, it was St. Thomas Aquinas with a pair of golden chances for the golden goal, only to be denied by Charger keeper James Pyatsky. With less than three minutes left, Michael O'Mealy found himself alone with the game on his foot, only to be robbed on a spectacular diving stop by Pyatsky. With under a minute to go, Werner struck a header that also had a chance, only to be denied by the visiting netminder to secure the deadlock.

The Spartans return to action this coming Wednesday, September 11, when they take on the College of Saint Rose in a 3:00 pm start at Spartan Field.
