Men's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw in Opener at Bloomsburg

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team started the 2014 campaign on the road, settling for a 0-0 tie at Bloomsburg University. Goalkeeper Nicholas Palumbo turned aside all 12 shots on goal to earn the shutout for the Spartans, who were outshot by a 19-17 margin in the season opener for both teams.

STAC carried the play early on, outshooting the hosts by a 9-4 spread in the first half, though all four Bloomsburg shots were on frame. Play evened out in the second half but the Spartans were dealt a blow when, with just under 11 minutes remaining in the scoreless tussle, Felix Morgalla was shown a red card and sent off, forcing the visitors to play a man down the rest of the way.

Regulation ended with both teams kept off the board and, after an uneventful first 10 minutes of overtime, Bloomsburg powered five shots toward in the final 10 minutes only to have Palumbo stand tall. Huskies keeper Jared Ott turned aside seven shots on goal.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday, September 10, playing their second of three in a row on the road to open the season at the College of St. Rose in a non-conference game with a 7:00 pm kickoff. Their home opener will be one week later, on September 17, in an East Coast Conference showdown with NYIT.
