STAC Men's Soccer Drops OT Heartbreaker at Daemen, 2-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team scored late in regulation to tie the score before falling in overtime, 2-1, in an East Coast Conference tilt at Daemen College. STAC falls to 3-5-2 overall, 0-5-0 in the ECC with the loss, as Daemen now stands at 4-5-0, 1-3-0.

A raw, rainy day contributed to limiting scoring chances in a scoreless first half, which saw Daemen hold a narrow 7-4 lead in shots. The hosts would break through first, with Sam Rugg heading in a corner kick from teammate Cole Beale at 60:47 for the first tally of the game.

STAC applied pressure but it appeared as though that lone goal would hold up, until Michael Corbi ripped a Julius Werner cross into the netting with just 3:36 remaining in regulation, sending the game into extra time.

After a scoreless 10 minutes, the teams traded ends and the Wildcats wasted little time grabbing the lead in the second overtime session, with Beale scoring at the 102:56 mark. This time there would be no late magic as the clock ran out on the Spartan setback.

St. Thomas Aquinas held a 19-15 shot advantage and a commanding 10-2 edge in corner kicks on the game, but Daemen proved to be more accurate, forcing STAC netminder to make eight saves to just five for Wildcat keeper Matt Daddario.

The Spartans return to ECC action on Saturday, October 11, traveling to face Queens College in a 3:00 pm start. They will then play their next four contests at the friendly confines of Spartan Field, starting against University of District of Columbia in a conference showdown on Wednesday, October 15. Kickoff is slated for approximately 3:30 pm, as the back end of a twin-bill following the women's contest against Post University.
