The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team emerged victorious, 2-1, in an East Coast Conference match at Queens College. Julius Werner netted the winner and Laurie Child added two assists as STAC's record improved to 4-5-2 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Queens fell to 2-7-0, 1-5-0.
Queens held the momentum through much of the first half but it was the Spartans who got on the board first, as Michael Corbi's blast from distance found the top corner of the net at the 31:15 mark. It was Corbi's 7th goal of the season, with the feed coming from Child.
Just over two minutes later, however, the Knights would find the equalizer. Pol Narbona sent a header toward goal that found its way past STAC netminder Nicholas Palumbo to tie the game at 33:57. Queens held the first half edge in shots by a 9-2 count, and recorded eight of the nine corner kicks over the first 45.
Palumbo held tough throughout as the Spartans found their way to the tiebreaking goal with just under 14 minutes to play in regulation. Child's free kick to the far post off a set piece found the head of Werner, who beat Queens keeper James Brostowski at 76:20, sending the Spartans home with a hard-earned win.
St. Thomas Aquinas was outshot by a 15-4 count on the day, but Palumbo's five saves were enough to preserve the victory.
The Spartans will play their next four games and five of their remaining six on their home pitch in Sparkill. STAC will host UDC in an East Coast Conference match on Wednesday, October 15 at approximately 3:30 (following the women's game vs. Post University), and return to action welcoming Mercy College to Spartan Field on Saturday, October 18.
