Corbi Nets Three Goals as STAC Men's Soccer Tops Felician, 3-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team rode a three-goal performance from Michael Corbi to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Felician College at Spartan Field. With the victory, STAC improves to 3-3-2 on the season, with Felician falling to 1-9-0.

STAC applied the pressure early and earned the reward less than three minutes into the contest. Daniel Borges' header off a scramble in close was saved nicely by Golden Falcons goalkeeper Anthony Tsouhnikas, but the rebound found the nearby foot of Corbi, who found the net at the 2:50 mark.

After a strong start for the home team, play levelled off until the Spartans struck again late in the half. This time it was Laurie Child who sent a pretty cross to Corbi, who converted his second of the game at 37:25, giving STAC a 2-0 halftime edge.

Felician showed signs of life in the second half, when Alex Jean's free kick from just inside the midfield line was nicely headed in by Rafa Coronel, cutting the deficit in half at 67:57. The visitors threatened but Spartan keeper Aiden Tansey was equal to the task until Corbi could put the game on ice.

With the clock winding down, Julius Werner's beautiful flick-on header sent Corbi alone on goal, where the junior deftly dribbled around reserve netminder John Burns for a big insurance talley at 87:31.

St. Thomas Aquinas outshot Felician by a decisive 18-9 margin, with Tansey recording five saves while the Golden Falcons' tandem was credited with seven on the afternoon.

The Spartans will now travel north for a pair of East Coast Conference tilts this coming weekend, starting at Roberts Wesleyan College on Friday, October 3, at 7:30 pm. They will then face Daemen College on Sunday, October 5, in a 1:30 pm start. After traveling to take on Queens College on October 11, they will return to Spartan Field to host the University of the District of Columbia on October 15.
