Wagner Penalty Kick Lifts STAC Men's Soccer Past Molloy, 1-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 decision over Molloy College in an East Coast Conference showdown at Spartan Field. Michael Wagner's second half PK goal was the difference as the Spartans improved to 7-5-3 overall and 4-5-0 in conference action. Molloy fell to 5-9-1, 5-3-0 with the setback.

An evenly and well-played first half resulted in a scoreless deadlock, with Molloy holding a narrow 7-6 lead in shots.

STAC turned up the pressure in an exciting second half, and had a chance to grab the lead when a penalty kick was awarded at the 68:43 mark, but Julius Werner's attempt was foiled on a diving stop by Lions netminder Justin Corke.

Minutes later, another Molloy foul in the box put the ball on the spot yet again, and this time it was Wagner to take the kick. Corke was unable to duplicate his feat, with Wagner's second goal of the season ripping the net at 73:53.

While the Spartans continued to threaten, the game remained a one-goal affair, giving the visitors an opportunity to draw even in the final seconds, but Chris Moschella's blast from inside the box was saved chest-high by goalkeeper Nicholas Palumbo, the last of the seniors six saves, securing his third career shutout.

Along with Palumbo, Sean DeVito and Laurie Child were honored on Senior Day in pregame ceremonies. The Spartans also honored inactive players Jack Legg and Peter Park.

The Spartans wrap up their ECC conference schedule at the University of Bridgeport in a 6:00 pm start this Wednesday, October 29, before wrapping up the season at home against Caldwell in a non-conference match on Saturday, November 1 at 1:00 pm.
