Spartans Set For Thursday's Season Opener at Bloomsburg

The St. Thomas Aquinas men's soccer team will opening the 2015 season tomorrow evening, at Bloomsbury University in PA.  The Spartans are coming off a 7-7-3 season and return all but three starters from the 2014 season, including leading goal scorer Michael Corbi

Corbi, a senior forward from Hopewell Junction, N.Y., scored 10 goals and added 2 assists last season.  STAC welcomes 9 freshmen to the 2015 squad.  

The Spartans will travel to play Lock Haven on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.  STAC's home opener will be at 2:00 on Tuesday September 8th, against East Stroudsburg.  STAC will open ECC play on the road against Dowling College on September 19th.  The Golden Lions were picked 3rd in the ECC Preseason Coaches Poll, while the Spartans received the 10th pick.  

LIU Post took the #1 spot in the ECC poll, receiving 9 of 11 first place votes to top the poll with 119 points. The Pioneers are coming off a 16 win season that saw them share the ECC Regular Season Championship and capture their first-ever NCAA East Region title. They also begin the 2015 campaign ranked at No. 11 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Top 25 poll.

STAC will host the Pioneers on October 31st in their final regular season game of the season.   

Thursday's game at Bloomsburg will start at 7:30 p.m.  Thus is the second year in a row the Spartans are opening against the Huskies; with last years game ending in a 0-0 draw after two scoreless overtimes. The Huskies finished with 19 shots, including 12 on goal, while the Spartans took 17 shots with 7 on goal.
