Kinsella's Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer to 1-1 tie at Mercy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team rallied for a 1-1 tie in an East Coast Conference match-up at Mercy College. Brian Kinsella's late goal with the Spartans a man down forged the tie, leaving STAC at 3-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in ECC play, with Mercy now at 4-7-1, 2-3-1.

Neither team was able to generate much offense with the score standing deadlocked through 70 tight minutes of play. Mercy was able to strike first at 71:08 when Mariglen Verjoni converted a header, beating STAC goalkeeper Sean Connolloy to put the hosts on top.

Things looked bleak for the Spartans as they were shown a red card just five minutes later. Despite playing a man down, STAC pushed for the equalizer in the waning minutes and Ivan Gomez found a seam, with Kinsella converting to tie the score with just 2:21 to play.

That would send the game to extra time, and each team battled through a scoreless 20 minutes to settle for the hard-fought tie. The Mavericks outshot STAC by a 15-11 margin, with Connolly credited with three saves.

The Spartans return to action for a non-conference battle at Georgian Court on Tuesday, October 13, followed by an ECC battle at Molloy on Friday night, October 16, before returing to host the University of Bridgeport in another conference showdown on Wednesday, October 21.
