Morales Nets Four Goals, Spartans Fall at Bloomfield, 7-6

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team fell to a 7-6 loss in a non-conference game at Bloomfield College. The Spartans fell to 8-4-4 with the loss, with Bloomfield improving to 5-10-2.

STAC took control early, with Ivan Dam opening the scoring at 4:19, followed closely by Luis Morales' first of four goals on the night at 8:18 to make the score 2-0. Nicholas Calabia got the hosts on the board at 31:29, but Morales tallied his second just two minutes later, and completed the hat-trick at 39:57 to give the Spartans a 4-1 halftime cushion.

Calabia's second of the game less than three minutes into the second half cut the gap to 4-2. Shaunavon DeSouza brought the Bears within one at 49:10, and Calabia tied the score at 52:31. DeSouza netted his second at 56:58 to give Bloomfield a stunning 5-4 lead, but the offensive onslaught was far from over.

Charlie Crane brought STAC even off a set piece at 67:44, and Morales' fourth of the game and 15th of the season reclaimed the lead for the Spartans at 80:16. DeSouza became the game's third different player to record a hat-trick, tying the score at 82:16. Bloomfield stunned the visitors with time winding down, as DeSouza's fourth of the night with 5:29 left in regulation sealed the victory.

The Spartans close out the regular season with another non-conference tilt on Saturday, October 29 at Rensselear, but their eyes will be set on East Coast Conference action as STAC's post-season fate still hangs in the balance. On Saturday, Bridgeport will wrap up the regular season in an 11:00 am start at Mercy College. If Mercy wins that contest, the Spartans would claim the fourth and final seed in the ECC Playoff Tournament next week. If Bridgeport wins, the Purple Knights would claim the final berth, joining LIU Post, Molloy, and NYIT in the field of four.
