Morales Hat-Trick Rallies Spartan Soccer to Wild 4-3 Victory at Goldey-Beacom

The St. Thomas Aquinas College soccer team rode a trio of Luis Morales goals to a 4-3 comeback victory at Goldey-Beacom College. The Spartans remain undefeated, having won their first three games of the season, with GBC dropping to 1-1 overall.

After winning their first two games of the season at home, the Spartans traveled to Delaware and Morales got his squad on the board first with an unassisted tally at the 10:28 mark. Declyn Brown knotted the score for the Lightning just under four minutes later, and Christan Jones put STAC back on top midway through the half on an assist from Charlie Crane.

That flurry would end up accounting for all of the first half scoring, but there was more to come after the break. The hosts grabbed the lead in stunning fashion, with Joe Traynor scoring at 67:15 to even the score, and teammate Alvaro Martinez giving Goldey-Beacom its first lead just three minutes later.

STAC would give its foes little time to celebrate, as Morales quieted the crowd with the equalizer just 57 seconds later. With just under 15 minutes remaining in regulation - and just 3:35 after his previous strike, Morales would convert again, giving his Spartans the lead for good on a cross from Jones.

Jack Nicholson held the fort from there, improving to 3-0 by making seven saves in the STAC net. Suhail Busmilla and Joe Traynor combined for six saves in the Lightning net, as Goldey-Beacom held a narrow 17-13 margin in shots on the afternoon.

The Spartans play the second of five straight on the road this Saturday, traveling to Assumption for a 1:00 pm start. They will open their East Coast Conference slate at Roberts Wesleyan on Friday, September 16, and will not see the friendly confines of Spartan Field until Wednesday, September 28, when the University of the District of Columbia visits for an ECC tilt.
